Every Himalayan cat cave is wet-felted by hand in Kathmandu, Nepal — from 100% New Zealand wool, by a women-led, fair-trade workshop. No machines pressing out thousands an hour. Just wool, warm water, soap and skilled hands.
The women who make them
Our caves come from a women-led workshop in Kathmandu, established in 2014. More than 500 women artisans — many from remote villages — earn a fair, steady wage and learn a craft they can build a future on.
It's a social enterprise first: meaningful work, safe conditions, and skills that stay in the community. When you buy a cave, that's who you're supporting.
The process
From raw fleece to finished cave
Wet-felting is one of the oldest textile crafts in the world. There's no weaving and no stitching — the wool fibres are bound together by hand into a single, seamless shell.
Sort & wash
Raw New Zealand wool is cleaned and sorted by hand, keeping the natural lanolin that makes it resilient.
Card & dye
Fibres are combed out (carded) and dyed in small batches, so colours stay soft and natural.
Layer
Fine cross-layers of wool are built up around a mould to form the walls of the cave.
Wet-felt
Warm water and natural soap are worked through the wool — hours of rolling and pressing lock the fibres together.
Shape & shrink
As it felts, the wool shrinks and is shaped over a form into a dense, sturdy, seamless shell.
Dry & finish
Each piece is air-dried, trimmed and checked by hand — so no two caves are ever exactly alike.
Skill that empowers
Wet-felting by hand takes years to master — reading the wool, judging the water, shaping a seamless shell entirely by feel. The women in our workshop are exceptional at it.
That mastery is the point. A craft this skilled means a fair wage, real recognition, and the quiet confidence of being very, very good at something — independence built one cave at a time.
Just wool. Nothing else.
One material, chosen on purpose: 100% New Zealand wool. It's naturally lanolin-rich, so it resists odour and dirt; warm in winter and breathable in summer; and completely free of plastic, foam and synthetic glues.
It's also kind to the planet — a renewable, biodegradable fibre that's safe around cats and built to last for years, not seasons.
