What Size Cat Cave Does My Cat Need? A Simple Sizing Guide

The most common question before buying a cat cave is simply: will my cat actually fit? Good news — most caves are designed for the average adult cat, and sizing is easy once you know what to look at.

Typical cat cave dimensions

Our standard handmade caves measure roughly:

• External size: ~50 cm wide × 32 cm tall
• Entrance opening: ~18–20 cm
• Best for cats up to: ~7 kg / 15 lb

Because each cave is hand-felted, dimensions vary slightly from piece to piece — that's the nature of a handmade object, not a defect.

How to measure your cat

You don't need to be exact, but two quick measurements help:

1. Curled length: watch how your cat curls up to sleep and measure that rough diameter. A cave should let them curl comfortably with a little room to spare.
2. Shoulder width: the entrance needs to be wider than your cat's shoulders so they can slip in and turn around easily.

By cat size

• Kittens & small cats (under 4 kg): a standard cave is roomy and reassuring — they'll often grow into it.
• Average adults (4–6 kg): the standard size is made for you. Most domestic shorthairs and longhairs fit perfectly.
• Large breeds (7 kg+, Maine Coons, Ragdolls): a very large or long cat may find a standard cave snug. Cats like snug, but if your cat is exceptionally big, contact us before ordering and we'll advise.

Cats like it cosy

A common mistake is buying too big. Cats feel safest in a space that fits closely around them — that snugness is the whole point of a den. A cave that's slightly cosy will get used far more than one that's cavernous and exposed.

What about two cats?

Some bonded cats will happily pile into one cave, but as a rule it's one cave per cat. In multi-cat homes, giving each cat their own hideaway reduces tension and territory disputes.
