Do Cats Actually Like Enclosed Beds? The Science of Why Cats Love Caves

If your cat ignores the plush open bed you bought and sleeps in a cardboard box, you're not alone — and your cat isn't being difficult. Cats are genuinely wired to prefer small, enclosed spaces. Understanding why explains a lot about their behaviour, and why an enclosed cat cave often gets used when an open bed doesn't.

Cats are both predator and prey

In the wild, a cat is a small hunter that is also hunted by larger animals. That dual role shaped their instincts: they want a vantage point to watch from, and a concealed spot where nothing can sneak up behind them. An enclosed den satisfies both — walls on most sides, one entrance to watch, and a feeling of being hidden while still in control.

Enclosure equals security

A covered space lowers a cat's sense of threat. With fewer open sides to monitor, the nervous system can settle and the cat can sleep deeply rather than dozing on alert. This is the same reason many cats gravitate to closets, drawers, boxes and the gap behind the sofa. A purpose-made cave gives them that secure feeling without you losing a wardrobe shelf.

Warmth matters more than you think

A cat's comfortable temperature range is higher than ours — around 30–36°C. An enclosed bed traps body heat and holds it close, so cats stay cosy without curling on a radiator. Wool is especially good at this: it's naturally insulating and breathable, warm in winter without overheating in summer.

Signs your cat wants a hideaway

• Sleeps in boxes, bags, laundry baskets or under furniture
• Seeks out closets or tight gaps when stressed or when there are guests
